Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

In the last class we studied about our relationship with God, and
the importance of keeping our eyes clean to see the glory of Jesus.
Tonight, we are going to study Matthew 12:43-45. Let us read the
passage.
Ở buổi trước, chúng ta đã học về mối quan hệ của chúng ta với Chúa
và tầm quan trọng của việc giữ cho mắt chúng ta được thánh sạch để nhìn thấy
được vinh quang của Chúa. Tối nay, chúng ta sẽ học Matthew 12:43-45. Chúng ta

We have referred to this passage a few times in our previous classes.
In this passage, Jesus explains what happens when a person does not repent
fully, but still tries to follow God. This passage is a continuation of Jesus’
reply to the scribes and the Pharisees who asked Him to perform a sign. The
first answer to these people’s request was that only evil and adulterous
generations ask for a sign. The second answer was that the only sign these
people are going to get is the sign of Jonah. We studied these in the last
class.
Chúng ta đã nhắc đến đoạn này vài lần trong các buổi trước. Trong
đoạn này, Chúa Giê Su giải thích điều gì xảy ra khi một người không sám hối một
cách hoàn toàn mà vẫn theo Chúa. Đoạn này là đoạn tiếp nối khi Chúa đáp lại các
thầy thông giáo và người Pha-ri-si người yêu cầu Chúa thực thi một dấu lạ. Câu
trả lời đầu tiên cho những người này là chỉ có những thế hệ gian ác và gian dâm
mới cầu xin một dấu lạ. Điều thứ hai đó là dấu lạ duy nhất mà những người này

The third response is what we study in tonight’s class. In
tonight’s passage, we read Jesus identifying the root cause of why the scribes
and the Pharisees are evil. He is explaining through a narration how an evil
spirit leaves a person and later returns to the same person with seven more
evil spirits and destroys the person’s life.
Điều thứ ba là điều chúng ta học được trong buổi trước. Trong buổi
hôm nay, chúng ta đọc được Chúa Giê Su chỉ ra gốc rễ của việc tại sao những
người thông giáo và người Pha-ri-si là những người gian ác, Ngài đã giải thích
qua một việc miêu tả một ác linh rời một người và sau đó mang lại cho cùng
người đó bảy ác linh khác hung dữ hơn và hủy hoại cuộc đời người đó hoàn toàn.
As I said, Jesus identifies the root problem of the scribes and the
Pharisees. Let us try to understand this. We read in Exodus that the people of
God were living in bondage in Egypt. God rescued them and brought them out of
Egypt to Canaan which was the most fertile place in the whole world. Canaan is
called the land flowing with milk and honey. Now let us read Deuteronomy
31:20 For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey,
which I promised on oath to their ancestors, and they have eaten their fill and
grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, despising me and
breaking my covenant.
Như tôi đã nói, Chúa phát hiện ra vấn đề gốc rễ của người thông
giáo và người Pha-ri-si. Chúng ta hãy cùng tìm hiểu. Chúng ta đọc trong Xuất Ai
Cập Ký rằng con cái Chúa đã bị sống trong xiềng xích nô lệ ở Ai Cập. Chúa đã
giải cứu họ và mang họ ra khỏi Ai Cập và đưa họ tới Canaan nơi đây là mùng đất
trù phú nhất trên thế giới. Canaan được gọi là miền đất chảy đầy sữa và mật
ong. Chúng ta hãy đọc Phục Truyền Luật Lệ Ký 31:20, Vì ta sẽ đưa dân nầy vào xứ
đượm sữa và mật; nhưng khi họ ăn no nê và mập mạnh thì sẽ chạy theo thần khác
và phụng thờ chúng, khinh thường Ta và phá bỏ giao ước với Ta.
What happened was, the people of God repented and followed God and
came out of slavery in Egypt. They passed through the Red Sea which represents
their baptism. But after some time, they forgot their repentance and turned
back to the same evil things that they left back in Egypt. In Egypt they were
forced to worship false gods and were slaves. When they repented, the evil
spirit left them. But when their life changed and they became rich and fat, the
people of God started practising all kinds of evil things that they once
rejected. They started worshipping the Egyptian idols, committing adultery, and
evil things again. As a result, all the evil spirits came back and started
settling in on these people. These scribes and Pharisees were descendents of
that group. It means the scribes and the Pharisees were now possessed with many
demons.
Điều xảy ra đó là con cái Chúa đã ăn năn sám hối và theo Chúa và
ra khỏi sự nô lệ ở Ai cập. Họ đi qua biển Đỏ chính là sự tượng trưng cho sự báp
tiêm rửa tội. Nhưng sau đó, họ quên mất sự ăn năn của mình và quay trở lại cùng
một tội ác xấu xa mà họ đã bỏ lại ở Ai Cập. Ở Ai Cập, người ta đã bị bắt phải
thờ phụng các thần khác và là nô lệ. Khi họ sám hối, ác linh rời khỏi họ. Nhưng
khi đời sống thay đổi và họ trở nên giàu có, mập mạnh, con cái Chúa bắt đầu thờ
phụng các thần Ai Cập, ngoại tình và làm các việc gian ác. Kết quả là, tất cả
các ác linh quay lại và bắt đầu xâm chiếm người nầy một lần nữa, Những thầy
thông giáo và người Pha ri si là con cháu của nhóm này. Có nghĩa rằng những
thầy thông giáo và người Pha ri si chứa đầy quỷ trong người.
They forsake the true God who delivered them from the bodange of
the devil and started following false gods. They discontinued true worship and
started following the evil worship that the Egyptians and other gentiles
practised. The nature of the evil worship is given in Psalm 106: 36-39 They
served their idols, which became a snare to them. They sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood, the blood of
their sons and daughters, who they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the
land was polluted with blood. Thus they became unclean in their acts, and
prostituted themselves in their doings.
Họ đã từ bỏ Chúa thật sự người giải cứu họ khỏi xiềng xích của quỷ
và bắt đầu thờ lạy các thần thánh khác. Họ không tiếp tục sự thờ phượng đúng và
bắt đầu đi theo những sự thờ phượng ma quỷ mà người Ai Cập và dân ngoại thực
hiện. Bản chất của việc thờ lạy này được đưa ra trong Thi Thiên 106:36-39, họ
thờ hình tượng của chúng, và điều nầy trở thành cái bẫy cho họ. Họ dâng con
trai con gái mình để cúng lễ ma quỷ. Họ làm đổ máu vô tội, tức là máu của con
trai con gái mình, để cúng tế cho hình tượng xứ Ca-naan. Khiến xứ bị ô uế vì
huyết ấy. Như vậy họ bị ô uế bởi công việc mình, và phạm tội tà dâm bằng hành
động của mình.
When God brought them to Canaan, He gave the people of Israel
clear instruction that you should not follow their ways and practices. You are
children of the true God. So, you should remain holy and pure. But, the
Israelites ignored God’s instruction and started participating in their evil
worships and festivals. Thus, they slowly started following the Canaanite gods
and their evil practices. The inclination towards the false gods and evil
practices was because they had once experienced them in Egypt. When they
repented, they did not repent completely but had the tendency of idol worship
still inside them. That is the reason why even after coming to a new place they
still went back to their old habits.
Khi Chúa đưa họ đến xứ Ca-naan, Ngài đã ban cho con dân Isarel
những chỉ dẫn rõ ràng rằng họ không được đi theo đường lối và hành động cuả chính
mình. Các con là con cái của Chúa thật sự. Vì vậy hãy luôn trong sáng và thánh
khiết. Nhưng người Israel đã phớt lờ chỉ dẫn của Chúa và bắt đầu tham gia vào
những sự thờ phượng và những lễ hội của quỷ. Do đó, họ dần dần bắt đầu đi theo
các thần của xứ Ca-naan và những hành động gian ác của họ. Xu hướng dịch chuyển
sang thờ phụng sai Chúa và các hành động gian ác đó là bởi vì họ đã từng trải
nghiệm điều đó ở Ai Cập. Khi họ sám hối họ đã không sám hối hoàn toàn nhưng có
xu hướng của việc thờ hình tượng vẫn ở trong họ. Đó là lý do tại sao ngay cả

The lesson for us is, even though we have repented, there might be
one thing that we have decided to keep with us. That one evil thing would later
become our complete destruction. In the case of the Israelites that one thing
was following the false gods. If you have repented fully, can you think of one
thing that you have decided to retain in your life. It is like cleaning our
house or selling off our possessions. Imagine that you decide to get rid of all
the unwanted things that occupy space in your house. Whilst getting rid of
them, you may come across something which looks attractive or valuable. It
could be a memorial of something related to your past evil relationship. You
change your mind and say, no I won't throw this away. I will keep it. But, the
danger of not throwing it away is that, the thing that you kept will later
become the cause of your destruction.
I hope you remember that in one class, I told a girl that there is
a devil hiding in her bookshelf. I asked her to throw those books away, but she
did not. And now, she is lost. Tonight, may I request you to throw that one
thing that you are holding on to. Let us read Mark 10:17-20. In this
passage we see the man saying yes to all that Jesus said as a requirement to
follow Him. Jesus said, no murder; the man replied never. Adultery? No Jesus.
Stealing? No my Lord; Cheating? No I do not cheat anyone; False witness? Not at
all; Honour your parents; Oh I love my parents and always obey them. When this
conversation took place, there were many people standing around and listening
to the conversation. Can you imagine what would have been the impression of those
people hearing this man? They must have praised him saying, Oh wow what a holy
man. He is a real saint. And this man was standing with his spiritual pride.
Then came the bang from Jesus. We read that Jesus looked at him and loved him,
and then said, there is one thing that you lack.
Trong một buổi học trước đây, tôi từng bảo một bạn nữ trong lớp
rằng có quỷ ẩn giấu trong giá sách của cô ấy. Tôi bảo cô ấy vứt hết sách đi,
nhưng cô ấy không làm. Và bây giờ, cô ấy không còn theo lớp học này nữa. Tối
nay, tôi có thể yêu cầu các bạn hãy vứt bỏ cái thứ mà bạn đang cố nắm giữ

yêu cha mẹ và luôn vâng lời họ. Khi cuộc hội thoại này xảy ra, có nhiều người
đứng quanh và lắng nghe. Bạn có thể đoán được cảm xúc của những người nghe
người đàn ông này nói không? Họ hẳn đã tán dương anh chàng này và nói, Ồ, người
này là một người thật thánh khiết. Đúng là thánh giữa trần thế rồi. Và người
này đứng đó với sự tự hào hãnh diện lớn. Nhưng Chúa lại dội cho anh ta một gáo
nước lạnh. Chúng ta thấy Chúa nhìn anh ta và yêu mến anh và sau đó nói, con vẫn
còn thiếu một điều nữa.
This is what happens with us too. We boast in front of others
showing off our prayer skills, fasting, observing lent, and leading a pious
life. We can show off anything to other human beings. But, there might be one
thing that we hide from other people. In human terms we call it our weakness.
But, no one except God can see that weakness. In front of others, we pretend to
be perfect human beings. For those who are new, every human being is composed
of three things. They are the body, mind, and spirit. The body and mind are our
flesh. It is our physical self. The spirit is from God and when we die, our
spirit goes back to God.
Đây cũng là điều xảy ra với chúng ta nữa. Chúng ta khoe khoang
trước mặt người khác khoe khả năng cầu nguyện, kiêng ăn, ăn chay và có đời sống
tâm linh. Chúng ta có thể khoe bất kỳ điều gì với người khác. Nhưng có một điều
mà chúng ta sẽ giấu khỏi mọi người. Ở khía cạnh con người, chúng ta gọi đó là
điểm yếu. Nhưng không ai ngoại trừ Chúa có thể nhìn thấy điểm yếu đó. Trước mặt
người khác, chúng ta giả vờ là một con người hoàn hảo. Với những bạn mới trong
lớp, mọi con người đều bao gồm ba điều. Đó là thân thể, tâm trí và tâm linh.
Thân thể và tâm trí đều là xác thịt. Đó là con người xác thịt của chúng ta. Tâm
linh đến từ Chúa và khi chúng ta chết, tâm linh cũng quay trở về với Chúa.
The devil always wants to destroy our spirit so that after death
he can take us with him. I hope you remember that a couple of weeks back we
learned that our spirit is a treasure hidden inside a clay jar. In order to
destroy our spirit, the devil attacks our body and mind. So we try to control
our body and fight the devil. We control our body from observing Lent and
fasting, and so on. It is not a difficult thing. But, controlling our mind is
very difficult. Our minds are filled with past memories, evil thoughts, all
that we see everyday on TV, internet and so on. Based on the quality of our
mind, we manage our emotions. A person who is unable to control his/her mind
fails to control emotions too. Such people are those who are short tempered,
holding a grudge, impatient, doing things without proper thoughts and so
on.
Quỷ luôn muốn phá hủy tâm linh của chúng ta để mà sau cái chết nó
có thể mang chúng ta theo nó. Hy vọng các bạn còn nhớ, mấy buổi trước học chúng
ta học rằng Thánh Linh chính là kho báu được giấu trong bình đất sét. Để phá
hủy tâm linh, quỷ tấn công thân xác và tâm trí. Vì thế chúng ta cố gắng kiểm
soát thân xác và đấu tranh chống lại quỷ. Chúng ta kiểm soát thân thể chúng ta
bằng cách thực hành kỳ Chay và kiêng ăn vv…Đây không phải là một điều khó.
Nhưng kiểm soát tâm trí là một điều khó khăn. Tâm trí chúng ta chứa đầy những
ký ức cũ, những suy nghĩ gian tà, tất cả những điều chúng ta nhìn thấy hàng
ngày trên TV, internet và vân vân. Dựa trên chất lượng của tâm trí, chúng ta
kiểm soát cảm xúc của mình. Một người không thể kiểm soát được tâm trí mình thì
cũng không thể kiểm soát được cảm xúc nữa. Những người đó là những người nóng
nảy, giữ những hận thù, thiếu kiên nhẫn, làm mọi thứ một cách thiếu suy nghĩ,
vân vân….
The devil knows the weakness of the minds of people very well.
Hence, when we focus on controlling our physical body with prostrating,
observing Lent and fasting, the devil straight away goes to attack our mind. As
a result, even during the Lent and fasting periods, our thoughts are evil. Now,
others cannot see our mind. When they look at us, they see us like the people
around saw the man talking to Jesus. Let us read 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. See,
all what is said here are physical things. The thing related to our mind and
emotion is love. It means, even if we do all the physical things like fasting
and so on, but do not have true love for God and pure love for others, there is
no point. We then are actually failures.
Quỷ biết rõ điểm yếu của tâm trí của chúng ta. Do đó, khi chúng ta
tập trung vào việc kiểm soát thân thể với sự thờ lạy, thực hành kỳ Chay và
kiêng ăn, quỷ ngay lập tức tấn công vào tâm trí. Kết quả là, ngay cả trong kỳ
Chay và kiêng ăn, suy nghĩ của chúng ta là suy nghĩ của quỷ. Nào, mọi người xung
quanh không thể nhìn thấy tâm trí chúng ta. Khi họ nhìn chúng ta, họ thấy chúng
ta như những người xung quanh người đàn ông nói chuyện với Chúa. Chúng ta hãy
đọc 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. Ở đây. Tất cả những điều này đều là những
điều vật chất. Những thứ liên quan đến tâm trí và cảm xúc là tình tình yêu
thương. Có nghĩa rằng, ngay cả nếu chúng ta làm tất cả những điều về thể xác
như kiêng ăn và vân vân, nhưng không có tình yêu thực sự cho Chúa và tình yêu
trong sáng cho người khác, chẳng có ích lợi gì. Chúng ta sau đó chỉ là những kẻ
thất bại mà thôi.
So how do we control our mind? When we fill our mind with the Word
of God, it will come under control. Then the devil won't be able to drag our
thoughts and emotions. It means we need to read and deeply meditate on the Word
of God. The more we meditate, the more our mind becomes stronger to fight the
devil. Psalm 1:1-2 Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the
wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;
but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law they meditate day
and night. The law of the Lord means the Word of God written in the
Bible.
Vậy làm thế nào chúng ta kiểm soát được tâm trí? Khi chúng ta lấp
đầy tâm trí với Lời của Chúa, nó sẽ được kiểm soát. Sau đó quỷ sẽ không thể kéo
suy nghĩ và tâm trí của chúng ta được. Có nghĩa rằng chúng ta cần phải đọc và
suy ngẫm kỹ về Lời của Chúa. Chúng ta càng suy nghĩ, tâm trí chúng ta sẽ càng
mạnh để đấu tranh chống lại quỷ. Thi Thiên 1:1-2, Phước cho người nào chẳng đi
theo mưu kế của kẻ ác, chẳng đứng trong đường tội nhân, không ngồi chỗ của kẻ
nhạo báng, nhưng vui thích về luật pháp của Đức Giê Hô Va và suy ngẫm luật pháp
ấy ngày và đêm. Luật pháp của Chúa chính là Lời của Chúa được viết trong Kinh
Thánh.
After departing from the slavery in Egypt, God’s children
travelled through the wilderness and deserts for forty years to reach Canaan.
Now just before crossing river Jordan to Canaan, God gave a strict instruction
to Joshua who was leading the people as we read in Joshua 1:6-9 Be strong
and courageous; for you shall put this people in possession of the land that I
swore to their ancestors to give them. Only be strong and very courageous,
being careful to act in accordance with all the law my servant Moses commanded
you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you may be
successful wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart out of your
mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to
act in accordance with all that is written in it.
Sau khi rời khỏi sự nô dịch ở Ai Cập, con cái Chúa đi đến vùng
hoang mạc trong bốn mươi năm để đến Ca-naan. Trước khi băng qua sông Jordan để
tới Canaan Chúa đã đưa ra chỉ thị nghiêm ngặt cho Joshua người lãnh đạo dân
chúng như chúng ta đọc trong Joshua 1:6-9. Hãy mạnh dạn và can đảm vì con sẽ
dẫn dân nầy đi nhận lấy đất mà Ta đã thề ban cho tổ phụ họ. Hãy mạnh dạn, thật
can đảm và cẩn thận làm theo tất cả luật pháp mà Môi Se đầy tớ Ta đã phán
truyền cho con, đừng xây qua bên phải hay bên trái, để con đi đâu cũng được thịnh
vượng. Quyển sách luật pháp này chớ xa miệng con, hãy suy ngẫm ngày và đêm, để
cẩn thận làm theo mọi điều đã chép trong đó. Vì như thế, con mới được thịnh
vượng trong con đường mình và mới thành công.
Great Lent is the season that we walk for 50 days through the
wilderness and desert. It means, we pass through great hardships. When we
control our body, the devil will fight against our mind. When we control our
mind, the devil will attack our body. So throughout the fifty days we are at
war with the devil. As you know, as the days pass, the intensity of the war
increases. There will be more and more fights with the devil everyday. The good
thing is that we will win. Our win will happen when we reach the cross of Jesus
Christ on Good Friday and witness His resurrection on Easter day.
Kỳ Chay Thánh là một thời gian chúng ta bước đi trong 50 ngày qua
hoang mạc và vùng hoang vắng. Có nghĩa rằng chúng ta bước qua những khó khăn
lớn. Khi chúng ta kiểm soát được thân thể, quỷ sẽ tấn công tâm trí. Khi chúng
ta kiểm soát tâm trí, quỷ sẽ tấn công thân thể. Vì vậy qua năm mươi ngày, chúng
ta ở trong trạng thái chiến tranh chống lại quỷ. Ngày qua ngày, sự khốc liệt
của cuộc chiến sẽ tăng lên. Sẽ có ngày càng nhiều những sự đấu tranh chống lại
quỷ hàng ngày. Điều tốt ở đây là chúng ta sẽ giành chiến thắng. Sự chiến thắng
sẽ xảy ra khi chúng ta đến được cây Thánh Giá của Chúa vào ngày Good Friday và
chứng kiến sự Phục Sinh của Ngài vào Lễ Phục Sinh.
The most important thing is to focus on our fight. What is that
‘one thing’ that the devil is not letting us to throw away. Focus on that area
throughout this lent. Do not give up. Keep fighting. You are not fighting
alone. It is the blood of Jesus that is fighting for you. The blood of Jesus
can easily wipe out every hidden sins and weaknesses from our body and mind.
That is what we read in 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He Himself
is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus
His Son cleanses us from all sin. Note down here, it says all sins. So we
cannot say that I have one weakness that I cannot throw out. We can. And it is
possible only by the blood of Jesus. So ask Jesus to cleanse you with His Holy
blood that He shed for us on the cross.
Điều quan trọng nhất là phải tập trung vào cuộc chiến của chúng
ta. Cái “một điều” mà quỷ không muốn chúng ta vứt bỏ là gì. Hãy tập trung vào
đó trong suốt kỳ Chay này. Đừng từ bỏ. Hãy đấu tranh không ngừng. Bạn không đấu
tranh một mình đâu. Chính máu của Chúa Giê Su đang chiến đấu cho bạn. Máu của
Chúa Giê Su có thể dễ dàng xóa bỏ mọi tội lỗi giấu kín và những sự yếu đuổi của
thể xác và tâm trí của bạn. Đây là điều chúng ta đọc được trong 1 John 1:7,
Nhưng nếu chúng ta bước đi trong ánh sáng cũng như chính Ngài ở trong ánh sáng,
thì chúng ta được tương giao với nhau và huyết của Đức Chúa Giê Su, con Ngài,
tẩy sạch mọi tội lỗi của chúng ta.” Hãy chú ý ở đây, câu này nói, mọi tội lỗi.
Vì vậy chúng ta không thể nói rằng, tôi có một điểm yếu này mà tôi không thể
vứt đi được. Và điều này chỉ có thể làm được bởi máu của Chúa Giê Su. Vì vậy
hãy cầu xin Chúa Giê Su thanh tẩy bạn bằng máu thánh mà Ngài rỏ xuống trên cây
Thánh Giá.
When we get rid of that one sin, then the demons won't be able to
come back or bring more demons to colonise inside us.
Khi chúng ta loại bỏ điều tội lỗi đó, thì quỷ sẽ không thể quay
lại và mang thêm quỷ để thống trị bên trong chúng ta được.
Let this Lent be a time for getting rid of that one difficult
sin.
Hãy để kỳ Chay này là lúc để loại bỏ một điều tội lỗi khó khăn đó.
